::Biserica Sf.

::A christian orthodox church built after an earthquake in the 19th century. One of 8 churches that have been moved from their original position in 1984 when, under the communist regime, a large part of central Bucharest was demolished and leveled for the 'People's Palace' ( nowadays Palace of Parliament ) and the blocks of flats in front of it, to be built. St. Elias of today is the continuation of a church, dating back to 1706, founded by Safta Brancoveanu, the daughter of Wallachia's romanian ruler Constantin Brancoveanu who is considered a saint in the Romanian Orthodox Church. Once the original building was destroyed in 1746 the monk Isaac Novaceanu with his sister Sanda and her husband Athanasie, erected a new one. Around 1837 - 1838, following the 1802 earthquake, a third church was comissioned by Minister Fotache Stirbei. In 1874 the wall paintings were added, signed by a, locally, famous neoclassicism painter Gheorghe Tatarescu. Restorations took place in 1950 and, more recently, in 1998. Visitors are welcome and the cult monument is remarkably well kept.
